Distinguished advisors and esteemed participants,
As the Secretary-General, it is my utmost pleasure and privilege to share with you the relaunch of SEV Junior Model United Nations after a two year hiatus, and to welcome you to its 5th session.
This year’s SEV JMUN will be held on the 21st and the 22nd of February, 2020 at Uskudar SEV’s Middle School Campus, with the theme of “Diversity: Promoting an Inclusive Society.” Ever since its establishment in 2013, SEV JMUN has proven to be a pillar of the MUN community, stimulating information exchange among middle and high school students and providing its participants with a sublime MUN experience as they take a preliminary step towards developing awareness for global issues. As my team and I prepare for its return, we have no doubt that SEV JMUN 2020 will meet the high expectations and standards established in the previous years of its organisation.
Even since 2017, the last year SEV JMUN took place in Çamlıca, we have witnessed a tremendous change in the social structure of the world as the global community. Far-right ideas have been on the rise, the refugee crisis escalated with families of defeated fighters relocating from conflict zones, the use of sanctions as political tools prevailed, breaches of civil rights occurred across the world, nationalist beliefs ruptured unions and international agreements, the humanitarian crises in Yemen, Central African Republic, Congo, Syria, South Sudan, and Venezuela gained momentum, the globe continued to warm, gender and religion based violence increased, and overall, tolerance to difference decreased in spite of peaceful efforts.
Hence, in SEV JMUN 2020, we want to emphasise the importance of promoting diversity in shaping an amicable future and intend for our participants to gain acquaintance to more liberal ways of thinking as they formulate solutions to the issues at hand.
We, as the Executive Committee of SEV JMUN, look forward to joining you in February at what will hopefully be an opportunity for you to participate in challenging, high-quality debates and your most memorable MUN experience to date.
